Moroccan Mint Tea
Also known as Maghrebi Mint Tea
Green tea brewed with fresh spearmint and sugar, then poured into glasses from high above. In Morocco the tea ritual is a symbol of hospitality.
Taste
Fresh mint and sweetness over a strong green tea
How to brew
Brew green tea with fresh mint leaves and sugar in boiling water. Pour it into glasses from a height, so the leaves stay at the bottom.
Cultural background
Gunpowder green tea from China reached North Africa through British trade in the 18th and 19th centuries, with tea and sugar arriving through the port of Essaouira. A popular account links its spread to tea that British merchants sent to Morocco during the Crimean War in the mid-19th century.
