Cultural background
For a long time the tea came only from a few old mother trees on a cliff, and it was rare: in 2005, 20 g from them sold at auction for ¥208,000. From 1985, tea from plants grown from these trees was sold under the same name, and most Da Hong Pao today comes from such plants. A legend, told in several versions, tells of a scholar cured by the tea who thanked the trees with a red robe.
